Makerere University has endured as a significant institution in the academic world, boasting a history that spans over a century.
From its humble beginnings with just 14 pioneering students to its vast network of alumni whose contributions have significantly impacted Africa’s progress, the university’s legacy is undeniable.
The stories of this prestigious university, situated in the heart of Africa, are thrilling, intriguing, and glamorous, and have become even more captivating in recent years. Its rich history, marked by remarkable milestones, breakthroughs, and brilliant minds, is epitomized by the iconic Main Building. This structure stands at the center of the institution and remains the university’s most recognizable symbol in photographs today.
As its name implies, the building is integral to the university’s narrative, serving as the central figure in all its stories.
The devastating events of one night in September 2020 not only cast a shadow over the hill but also marred the rich history of the ivory tower.
In response, Makerere University stakeholders, led by the Government of Uganda, launched a mission to restore this remarkable architectural masterpiece, raising over 20 billion shillings to fund the restoration efforts. Initially, the goal was to complete the reconstruction before the centenary celebrations in 2022, but unforeseen circumstances disrupted these plans. It wasn’t until this week in mid-2024 that the building finally regained its iconic appearance.
Although it has taken some time, the university is well on its way to removing the thorn that the fire embedded in its side. Its completion will certainly be a cause for celebration.
