The Graduate Management Admission Test is a computer adaptive test intended to assess certain analytical, writing, quantitative, verbal, and reading skills in written English for use in admission to a graduate management program, such as a Master of Business Administration program.
The GMAT exam is a standardized test that measures your skills in analytical writing, integrated reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and verbal reasoning. It is used by many graduate business schools around the world as part of their admission criteria.
The GMAT exam has four sections:
- Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA): You have to write an essay that analyzes an argument in 30 minutes.
- Integrated Reasoning (IR): You have to answer 12 questions that test your ability to evaluate and synthesize data from multiple sources in 30 minutes.
- Quantitative Reasoning (QR): You have to answer 31 questions that test your mathematical and problem-solving skills in 62 minutes.
- Verbal Reasoning (VR): You have to answer 36 questions that test your reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction skills in 65 minutes.
The GMAT exam is scored on a scale of 200 to 800, based on your performance on the QR and VR sections. The AWA and IR sections are scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6 and 1 to 8, respectively. The GMAT exam is offered in both test center and online formats. You can take the exam up to five times a year, but no more than eight times in total. You have to wait at least 16 days between attempts. The GMAT exam fee is US$ 275.

What is the Format and timing?
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized entrance exam used for business school—schools will often require it as part of your application to Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs. The exam, administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), measures analytical and critical thinking skills commonly necessary for success in graduate business programs.
The GMAT exam consists of four sections: an analytical writing assessment, an integrated reasoning section, a quantitative section, and a verbal section. Total testing time is three hours and seven minutes. Test takers have 30 minutes for the analytical writing assessment and another 30 minutes to work through 12 questions, which often have multiple parts on the integrated reasoning section and are given 62 minutes to work through 31 questions in the quantitative section and another 65 minutes to get through 36 questions in the verbal section.

The quantitative and verbal sections of the GMAT exam are both multiple-choice and are administered in the computer-adaptive format, adjusting to a test taker’s level of ability. At the start of the quantitative and verbal sections, test takers are presented with a question of average difficulty. As questions are answered correctly, the computer presents the test taker with increasingly difficult questions and as questions are answered incorrectly the computer presents the test taker with questions of decreasing difficulty. This process continues until test takers complete each section, at which point the computer will have an accurate assessment of their ability level in that subject area and come up with a raw score for each section.
On July 11, 2017, the GMAC announced that from now on the order in which the different parts of the GMAT are taken can be chosen at the beginning of the exam.
Three options will be available at the test center:
- Analytical Writing Assessment, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative, Verbal (original order)
- Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessment
- Quantitative, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning, Analytical Writing Assessmen.
In April 2018, the GMAC officially shortened the test by half an hour, shortening the verbal and quantitative sections from 75 minutes each to 65 and 62 minutes, respectively, and shortening some of the instruction screens.

Test centres vs. online exam , what is better for you GMAT assessment?

You can schedule your GMAT exam at an onsite facility or take it online from home, as long as you have the appropriate software. Deciding where to take your GMAT depends on your preferences. If you like a testing facility’s imposed silence and structure, that might be the best option. However, if you prefer taking the test from the comfort of your home, that might be your best option.
In-person testing is available seven days a week, and you can book it up to six months in advance. At-home testing is available whenever you are. Either method allows you to take the exam up to five times within 12 months.

How much does GMAT cost?
The fee to take the GMAT exam at a testing centre is 275 USD . You may encounter additional fees for enhanced score reports.
If you take the test online, the fee is 300 USD . The biggest difference is you can decide which schools will receive your scores after you learn how you did.
You may need to pay additional fees if you need to change the location or reschedule your test.
Eligibility requirements
You must be at least 18 to take the GMAT, though candidates between 13 and 17 can take the exam with a legal guardian’s written permission . Most people who take the exam are doing so to pursue their MBA. While the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) may list no specific educational requirements, most candidates already hold a bachelor’s degree.
